A copy of ‘Poetry of Byron’ was returned to St Bees School in Whitehaven, the UK after being borrowed 113 years ago!
On September 25, 1911 a school boy named Leonard Ewbank, born 131 years ago, went to his school’s library and borrowed the book that he never got the chance to return himself.
Ewbank went on to study at Queen’s College in Oxford but in 1915 was recruited to fight in the first World War.
In February 1916, he was killed in the battle of Ypres and was buried in Belguim alongside more than 2,000 other troops.
A total of 113 years later, a man found and promptly returned the book to the school, which sparked interest in Ewbank’s story.
Headmaster Andrew Keep remarked that the school was “honoured” to have the book returned as a tribute to Mr Ewbank.
“It's incredible to think that a piece of St Bees' history has found its way back to us after all these years,” told the BBC.
Ewbank is commemorated on the school’s roll of honour as “an Englishman, brave, honest and loyal".
