REGIONAL heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Egypt yesterday called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon as Israeli military strikes killed at least 50 more Palestinians.
Israeli forces also tightened their squeeze around Jabaliya in the north of the enclave, amid fierce battles with Hamas.
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi discussed regional developments, particularly the situations in Gaza and Lebanon, as they met in Cairo yesterday, the presidency said.
“They demanded to start taking steps to reach calm that include a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon,” it added.
President Al Sisi also agreed to deepen trade and investment co-operation as he held talks with the visiting Saudi leader.
The Crown Prince, known as MBS, made his last official visit to Egypt in 2022.
Meanwhile, the United States has warned Israel that it must take steps in the next month to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza or face potential restrictions on military aid, US officials said in Washington, in the strongest such warning since Israeli operations to root out Hamas began a year ago.
At least 17 people were killed by Israeli fire near Al Falouja in Jabaliya, the largest of Gaza’s eight historic refugee camps, while 10 others were killed in Bani Suhaila in Khan Younis yesterday.
