A horrific case of rape and murder in the state of West Bengal has sent shockwaves across India.
A 31-year-old PG trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The shocking incident took place between 3-5 am and sparked an outrage of protests across the country. Junior doctors in West Bengal refused to work on Tuesday (August 13) demanding justice for the victim.
A female doctor from Delhi stated, "Women doctors are not safe in hospitals, we demand a CBI probe into the matter."
A post-mortem report revealed the horrific torture that the victim endured at the State-run medical college and hospital prior to her death.
According to the four-page report, there was a deep wound in her private parts caused by "perverted sexuality" and "genital torture", as well as a broken thyroid cartilage due to strangulation, which ultimately resulted in her death.
Moreover, the analysis revealed that the victim’s nose and mouth were clamped to prevent her from screaming, and her head had been pushed against a wall. The report stated, "The mouth and throat were constantly pressed to prevent screaming. The throat was strangled to suffocate. The thyroid cartilage broke due to strangling." Additional injuries were found on her belly, lips, fingers and left leg.
It also revealed gruesome details of the woman bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, along with her private parts.
Evidence shows that the woman desperately tried to resist and fight back, resulting with several scratch marks across her face, allegedly caused by the suspects’ fingernails whilst restraining her.
The body of the post-graduate trainee was found in the hospital's seminar room on Friday morning.
The suspect, Sanjoy Roy was arrested on Saturday, connecting him to the case based on CCTV footage, which showed him entering the building.
The horrific rape and murder has caused widespread outrage across India, with doctors and nurses leading protests.
Additionally, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, has resigned from his post.
