Bahrain;s elite athlete Birhanu Balew had an unimpressive season debut on track last night in the men’s 3,000 metres at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting in Sweden.
Competing against some of the world’s best long-distance specialists, Balew completed the race in seven minutes 46.10 seconds. He was never in the running for a finish amongst the leaders.
Narve Gilje Nordas of Norway won in 7:33.49, while Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu of Switzerland finished as the runner-up in 7:33.68. Luis Grijalva of Guatemala followed narrowly behind in 7:33.96 for third.
Balew was running in his fourth race of 2024 but first on the oval, with his three previ- ous competitive appearances in road events. His time was far from his personal best in the distance of 7:31.77, which he clocked in 2022.
Balew is one of the kingdom’s top athletes and is likely to be a part of the national team that will be going for gold at this summer’s Paris Olympic Games 2024.
