BAHRAIN has welcomed a ceasefire initiative for the Gaza Strip put forward by US President Joe Biden.
The kingdom appreciates the initiative which calls on all parties to respond seriously and positively to an opportunity to permanently end the war, release the hostages and detainees, rebuild the strip, and expand the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to civilians, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday in a statement.
The ministry said Bahrain welcomed all initiatives and efforts aimed at an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and addressing the catastrophic humanitarian situation there, which were consistent with the decisions of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by the kingdom last month.
The summit also called for holding an international conference for peace in the Middle East leading to the establishment of a national, independent and secure Palestinian state.
President Biden has laid out what he described as a three-phase Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying ‘it’s time for this war to end’ and winning a positive initial reaction from Hamas.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said yesterday that the US government has ‘every expectation’ that Israel will accept a ceasefire proposal that would begin with a six-week cessation of hostilities if Hamas takes the deal.
