Egyptian sports critic Mohamed Shabana said he plans to file a defamation suit after Israeli security agency Shin Bet published a report misidentifying him as a Hamas leader, a namesake of the journalist, they believed to have killed.
Shabana said that he would be demanding substantial compensation for damage inflicted on his political future, his family, and his audience in the Egyptian media.
He also said he would donate the compensation to the Palestinian cause.
The controversy came about after Shin Bet published a report on social media with Shabana's picture, stating that he was a Hamas leader they had killed.
The image was soon picked up by Israeli media claiming that Mohammed Shabana, a leader in the Al Qassam Brigades had been killed in Rafah. The Israeli media then immediately retracted their report, stating that the assassination attempt on Mohammed Shabana had failed.
The social media faux pas sparked an uproar almost immediately, with Egyptian sports audiences recognising Shabana and mocking the Shin Bet.
