CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious’ rising star Antonio Tiberi held on to the Maglia Bianca despite a challenging 19th stage yesterday in the Giro d’Italia cycling race.
Tiberi finished the 157km leg in 30th place overall, more than 15 minutes behind the victor. But he continued to wear the Maglia Bianca or “white jersey” as the race’s best young rider, with only the final two stages left today and tomorrow.
Tiberi enjoys a 41-second gap ahead of Thymen Arensman of INEOS Grenadiers in the Maglia Bianca rankings.
He followed teammate Damiano Caruso on yesterday’s stage classification, with his fellow-Italian placing 29th. Amongst the other Bahrain Victorious riders, Edoardo Zambanini, also from Italy, came 50th, Austrian Rainer Kepplinger was 59th, German Jasha Sutterlin finished 77th, and Italian Andrea Pasqualon was 78th from the 142 competitors who finished.
Following yesterday’s leg, Tiberi stayed fifth on the race’s general classification (GC) for the Maglia Rosa or leader’s “pink jersey”. He has a two-minute gap from third, currently being held by Arensman’s teammate Geraint Thomas. Caruso joins Tiberi in the GC’s top 20 in 19th position.
Meanwhile, in the overall teams’ ranking, Bahrain Victorious remained fourth amongst the 22 squads participating. They are nearly 30 minutes behind current-third placers UAE Team Emirates, with Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team in first and INEOS second.
The Giro d’Italia 2024 continues today with the 20th and penultimate round, starting from Alpago and ending in Bassano del Grappa, covering a total of 184km. Tomorrow’s final 125km stage will be held in Rome.
