Bahrain's para athletes came close to medalling at the Para Athletics World Championships 2024 in Kobe, Japan.
Ruba Alamri and Hussain Abdulaziz each finished in fourth place in their respective competition categories.
Alamri took her impressive classification in the women’s discus throw F55 final. She had a best mark of 22.78 metres in her fourth of six attempts, bringing her one spot shy of taking a bronze medal. Alamri’s other throws in her participation were 21.39m, 22.02m, 22.72m, 22.47m, and 21.15m.
Erica Maria Castano Salazar of Colombia took the gold with a 26.88m throw, while Feixia Dong of China claimed the silver at 26.37m. Rosa Maria Guerrero Cazares of Mexico joined them on the podium as bronze-medallist with a 25.80m throw.
On the distaff side, Abdulaziz finished fourth in the men’s 400 metres T11 final, narrowly missing out on a bronze. Running with his guide Abdallah Djimel, Abduaziz completed the race in a time of 54.07 seconds.
Chris Kinda of Namibia was the gold-medallist in 52.35s, while Eduardo Manuel Uceda Novas of Spain took silver in 52.61s. Felipe De Souza Gomes of Brazil finished third in 52.65s.
The multi-day meeting, which continues until tomorrow, is the world’s premier para-athletics event established by the International Paralympic Committee. It is one of the most important qualifying competitions for the Paralympic Games.
The Bahraini pair were two of over 1,000 para-athletes representing more than 100 countries from around the world to take part in 168 medal events.
Alamri, Abdulaziz and Djimel were accompanied in Kobe by Bahrain mission director Shaikha Al Shaiba and coaches Musa Hassan, Hassan Muftah and Ahmed Mushaima.
