MANAMA: The Foreign Ministry yesterday summoned Iranian acting charge d’affaires Hameed Shafe’e Zad in protest against recent statements by his country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Under-secretary Abdulla Abdullatif Abdulla handed over an official memorandum in protest against the statements which, he said, represented flagrant interference in Bahrain’s internal affairs, an unacceptable violation of its sovereignty and independence and an affront to the UN principles.
The statements also reflect Iran’s known policy of sectarian discrimination and are contrary to the values of civilised societies, he said.
Such false statements that carry an explicit incitement and reflect a clear determination to foment discord and fuel tensions in the region must stop, the under-secretary said.
He stressed the need of committing fully to the principles of the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation.
He urged full compliance with the principles of good neighbourliness and the norms governing relations between sovereign states, affirming that Bahrain would not hesitate to take measures to protect its interests, maintain its security and stability and ensure the safety of its people.
