BAHRAIN added a bronze medal yesterday to their already impressive medal haul at the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar.
The kingdom’s shooting tandem of Marwa Buarki and Saeed Ali climbed the podium for third place in the mixed teams’ trap competition, held as part of the last day of action at Lusail Shooting Range.
Buarki and Ali secured their final classification after posting a score of 22 in the final, which followed three rounds of qualification.
Qatar’s Saeed Abusharib and Metha Albinali won gold with a 31 score, while Mohammed Dalmook Al Maktoum and Aisha Alyassi of the UAE took silver at 29.
Bahrain had a second pairing take part in the event with Maryam Sulaiti and Ismaeel Ghuloom, but they could not advance to the final round.
With yesterday’s bronze, the kingdom’s delegation raised their medal haul to 63 from all sports, including 25 gold, 22 silver, and 16 bronze.
Meanwhile, also yesterday in Doha, Bahrain’s archers ended their participation in the individual qualification phase of the recurve and compound competitions, also held at Lusail Shooting Range.
Bahrain’s delegation in the Qatari capital have just one contest remaining in their schedule. The kingdom’s senior men’s handball national team, who have already secured the gold medals in their tournament, complete the kingdom’s programme at this year’s GCC Games with their final assignment today against the UAE.
It will be the penultimate fixture of the five-nation men’s handball competition, which will wrap up tomorrow with hosts Qatar facing Saudi Arabia. That game will bring the curtain down on the multi-sport meeting, with both the Qataris and Saudis still vying for the silver medals.
The fixtures this evening and tomorrow are both scheduled for 6.30pm starts, Bahrain time, at Duhail Handball Hall.
The Bahrainis secured their crown on Tuesday night after defeating the host Qataris 24-19. The result marked the nationals’ third straight victory in their tournament and it maintained their unbeaten record heading into tonight’s clash.
Bahrain’s senior men’s handball national team are coached by Swedish tactician Robert Hedin, who has a 19-player squad in Doha, including Hussain Al Sayyad, Mohammed Abdulhussain, Mohammed Habib Ahmed, Mohammed Habib Naser, Ahmed Fadhul, Mohammed Hameed, Jassim Khamis, Ahmed Kadhem, Hesham Issa, Ali Alasheeri, Salman Al Showaikh, Ali Mahmoud, Ali Redha, Jaafar Al Fursan, Sayed Ali Basem, Hussain Mahfoudh, Ahmed Taleb, Ahmed Eid, and Abdulla Abdulkarim.
Elsewhere yesterday at the GCC Games, Bahrain’s chef de mission and Bahrain Olympic Committee Arab and international relations head Maryam Mardana received Qatar’s delegation director Najla Al Kharayin, who visited the Bahrain headquarters.
Mardana expressed her sincere thanks to Qatar, its leadership, government, and people, for the excellent hosting, organisation, and warm welcome at the fourth GCC Games.
Bahrain participated with a total of 219 delegation members in Doha, headlined by 146 athletes – 100 men and 46 women. They competed in 16 of the event’s 18 sports.
Their current winnings is a record for gold medals from all four editions of the GCC Games. In the previous event in 2022, the nationals bagged a sensational 64 medals, including 20 gold medals, 23 silver, and 21 bronze. In 2015, they came away with 43 medals, including six gold, 21 silver, and 16 bronze; while in 2011, Bahrain came away with 19 medals, including eight gold, six silver, and five bronze.
