ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN captured three medals, including two gold, in the 21st Arab Youth Athletics Championships, which is set to come to a close today in Rades, Tunisia.
Aisha Abdullah and Raihanah Garoubah bagged the two regional titles for the kingdom’s national team in the under-20 event, which features more than 200 athletes representing 15 Arab nations.
Abdullah triumphed in the women’s 400 metres final where she led a sensational one-two with fellow-Bahraini Sufian Abdulghani, who came away with the silver medal for the kingdom’s third accolade at the meeting.
Abdullah secured first place with a new personal best time of 53.69 seconds, finishing marginally ahead of Abdulghani who clocked a mark of 53.85s as runner-up. Rania El Hamadaoui from Morocco took bronze in 54.08s.
Meanwhile, Garoubah struck gold in the women’s 100m final, powering to a winning time of 11.55 seconds. Arwa Ali from the UAE claimed the silver medal in 12.00s, while Maria Saadi from Morocco won bronze in 12.03s.
Bahrain’s delegation head and former national team sprinter Faten Abdulnabi praised the high technical level in the championships, and stressed that the positive results achieved by the team so far reflect the development of athletics in the kingdom.
