Anant Ambani, the son of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani, has offered to take in hippos descended from those brought to Colombia by drug kingpin Pablo Escobar to prevent them from being euthanised.
The Colombian government recently considered a cull to manage the population of approximately 200 hippos, which have disrupted local ecosystems since escaping Escobar’s private zoo decades ago.
Ambani has formally requested that the government allow the "safe, scientifically-led translocation" of 80 of the animals to his Vantara facility in Gujarat, India.
Vantara, a 3,500-acre facility run by the philanthropic arm of Reliance, already houses 2,000 species. Ambani stated that the hippos "did not choose where they were born" and deserves a permanent home rather than a death sentence.
