More than BD24.6 million has been spent on infrastructure and road projects in the Capital Governorate’s constituency nine since the start of the current legislative term.
Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj revealed that more sewage and road schemes are currently in the design and implementation phase.
He said the ministry continued to prioritise infrastructure upgrades in line with population growth, urban development and investment needs in areas including western Sitra, East and West Eker and Ma’ameer alongside East Sitra Town.
“The ministry pays great attention to implementing service and infrastructure projects that directly benefit citizens and residents across all governorates,” Mr Al Hawaj said, in response to a parliamentary question by area MP Mohsin Al Asbool.
“We are working continuously to strengthen infrastructure and keep pace with development through strategic service plans and programmes.”
The minister said sewage network coverage in the Capital Governorate had reached around 93 per cent, while developed areas in constituency nine were approximately 90pc covered.
To connect remaining areas, four sewage projects are in the pipeline. These include new networks in Sitra Blocks 607 and 608 and part of 606, serving 126 properties, and Sitra Blocks 611 and 606, expected to serve 350 properties, both currently at the detailed design stage.
In East and West Eker, sewage projects covering Blocks 623, 624 and 625 are designed to serve 243 properties, with designs already completed.
“These projects will be implemented after completing the necessary procedures, prioritisation and budget allocation,” the minister added.
He outlined a list of completed road works in the district, with a combined value of BD24,613,644.
Among the largest was the East Sitra Housing Project, which included construction of a major four-lane road in each direction, linking the housing area to Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al Fateh Highway.
Other completed works included road repaving and paving projects across East and West Eker, Ma’ameer, and Sitra Safala, alongside stormwater drainage installations and asphalt resurfacing of key internal roads.
“These projects were implemented to improve safety, accessibility and traffic flow,” Mr Al Hawaj said.
One road project is currently under construction in East Eker, involving the paving of Road 2354. The project is 10pc complete, carries a cost of BD70,000, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
Looking ahead, the minister confirmed that preparations were underway for the major Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway Development, a key arterial route serving the district.
“A consultant has been appointed to review the detailed designs,” Mr Al Hawaj said.
“The project includes widening the street from three lanes to four in each direction, constructing overpasses at key intersections, upgrading stormwater drainage, improving lighting, providing pedestrian sidewalks and installing traffic and warning signs.”
The minister will appear during Tuesday’s session to respond to further queries the MP may have.
