His Majesty King Hamad’s support for traditional sports reflects the commitment to preserving heritage sports, his Personal Representative and Supreme Council for the Environment president Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa has said.
This motivates Bahraini youth to participate, thereby reinforcing national identity and heritage, he said as he attended the closing ceremony of the eighth edition of the Nasser Bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season, held in the area adjacent to the Bahrain National Museum.
The ceremony, also attended by Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, marked the conclusion of more than three months of competitions celebrating Bahrain’s rich maritime history and heritage, with wide participation across age groups.
Shaikh Abdulla witnessed the start of the open-water swimming competition for ages 30-45, the swimming race for ages 46 and above, and the final traditional 30-foot rowing race over 3,000m for the His Majesty the King Cup, featuring elite teams from Bahrain and other GCC countries.
He later presented the awards to the winners.
Shaikh Abdulla congratulated His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and SCYS deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa on the success of the marine heritage season.
In the traditional rowing race for the King’s Cup, the ‘Ahad Oman’ team won first place. Bahrain’s ‘Eisar’ team came second and Oman’s ‘Shabab Sohar’ team finished third.
In the open-water swimming for ages 30-45, Mohammed Yahya Jafan finished first, Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Dosari second and Hamad Mohammed Al Mansoori third.
In the swimming race for ages 46 and above, Sanad Bader Jassim won first place, Abdulrahman Jassim Abdulrahman second and Nawaf Hamad Majdam third.
