Legislators are calling for the construction of a fully equipped indoor sports hall at Sanabis Primary Boys School.
The proposal by five MPs led by services committee chairman and area MP Mamdooh Al Saleh seeks government approval to build a modern, air-conditioned sports facility fitted with the latest equipment, along with a stage and multi-purpose space for school and community events.
According to the services committee report, the project is driven by several public-interest considerations, including:
- Providing a properly equipped indoor space that meets students’ physical and developmental needs.
- Protecting students from extreme heat during Bahrain’s long summer months and enabling sports classes to continue year-round.
- Encouraging student attendance, behaviour and academic performance by improving school facilities.
- Offering a suitable venue for various school functions such as graduation ceremonies, performances, parent meetings and exhibitions.
Mr Al Saleh stressed the importance of ensuring that students in older neighbourhoods are not left behind.
“Sanabis is one of Bahrain’s established communities, yet its primary school still lacks a basic facility that many newer schools enjoy,” he said.
“Our children deserve equal access to safe, modern and climate-appropriate sports spaces. This project is about fairness, health and dignity.”
He added that investing in school infrastructure contributes directly to social stability.
“A sports hall is not a luxury, it is a fundamental part of building confident, active and disciplined young citizens,” Mr Al Saleh said.
The Education Ministry noted that its 2020–2030 infrastructure development plan aims to expand and upgrade educational facilities across Bahrain.
However, following a structural assessment of Sanabis Primary Boys School, the ministry concluded that limited space on the school grounds currently prevents the construction of a regulation-standard sports hall.
Despite this, the ministry said it is exploring alternative solutions to create suitable activity areas and promised to consider the proposal for inclusion in future development plans ‘within available resources’.
