GOLF – CHINA made a clean sweep of the gold medals yesterday in the golf competitions of the third Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
The Chinese won both titles in the girls’ and boys’ teams events, while Jinghan Cui claimed the girls’ individual crown and Jin Han won the boys’ individual gold medal.
Cui spearheaded the girls’ squad that also included Yijia Ren and Menghan Li. They secured their title after finishing their 54-hole competition at the Royal Golf Club with a 47-under-par total of 385. Thailand were the silver-medallists a massive 19 strokes behind, while Chinese Taipei took bronze 25 strokes back.
Cui won her individual gold after carding a 21-under-par total of 195 from her three rounds. Ren was runner-up by three shots, while Li completed an all-Chinese podium five strokes from first place.
On the distaff, China’s boys’ team comprising Han, Jinheng Yan, and Shijun Jing edged Vietnam by one stroke to claim their gold medals. They had a 15-under score of 417 from all days, while the Vietnamese followed on a 418 total. Indonesia claimed the bronze medals seven shots back on a 424 score.
Han claimed his individual gold also by just one shot. He finished on a 12-under 204 score, while Anh Nguye Tuan from Vietnam was second on 11-under. Jayawardana Dornan from Indonesia claimed the bronze medal with a nine-under-par 207 total.
