BASKETBALL – Bahrain clubs Al Ahli and Manama will be fighting this evening and tomorrow, respectively, to stay in contention for the Gulf sub-zone semi-finals of the 2024-25 FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL).
Both sides will be playing their concluding games in the tournament’s preliminary round.
Ahli are set to take on Al Bashaer Club of Oman in their Group A clash tonight scheduled for a 7.30pm tip-off at the Bahrain Basketball Association Arena in Umm Al Hassam.
Manama, meanwhile, are also at home when they take on Ittihad Club of Saudi Arabia in Group B tomorrow at the same venue, with the same start time.
Ahli will be hoping to keep their Gulf semis bid alive. They head into their concluding assignment currently third on their division table with just one win from five games. Bashaer are in last place and are the only team that are still winless in the tournament.
Kuwait SC top the Group A table with an unbeaten record in five outings, while Shabab Al Ahli of the UAE follow with four wins and one loss. The Kuwaitis host the Emiratis in this evening’s other divisional clash at 7pm.
Should the positions remain the same after tonight, Kuwait will advance directly to the Gulf last four, while Shabab Al Ahli and Bahrain’s Ahli will compete in a cross-over play-off round with two other teams from Group B to claim the other semi-final berths.
Manama, on the other hand, can go directly to the final four depending on tomorrow’s results in Group B.
Both Manama and leaders Al Qadsia of Kuwait are on 3-2 win-loss records, while Al Arabi of Qatar and Ittihad are on 2-3 marks. Qadsia host Arabi in Kuwait City at 7pm.
Only the top team marches through straight to the semis, while the second and third-ranked squads compete in the play-offs.
