Bahrain are champions of the 26th Gulf Cup in Kuwait.
The kingdom’s senior men’s football national team captured the coveted title for only the second time in the competition’s history following a heart-stopping 2-1 victory over Oman in a drama-filled final at Jaber Al Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait City yesterday.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, congratulated His Majesty King Hamad on the victory.
He expressed his gratitude to His Majesty, the King’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa as well as SCYS first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa for their dedicated efforts in supporting the kingdom’s sports sector.
His Majesty and HRH Prince Salman were congratulated by Ruling Family members, ministers, dignitaries, sports clubs, senior officials and officers as well as citizens and residents on the occasion.
Star midfielder Mohammed Jassim Marhoon was involved in both of the Bahrainis’ goals.
They were just two minutes apart late in the second half.
Marhoon first converted a 78th minute penalty after being taken down in the box by Oman’s Jameel Saleem Yahmmadi.
Then, in the 80th minute, he looked to deliver a pass from the left of the area but the ball was deflected by Omani defender Mohammed Almusallami into his own net.
Earlier in the contest, the Omanis took the lead in the 17th minute through Abdulrahman Mushaifiri, who headed in from close range off a corner kick.
