BASKETBALL – Muharraq made a winning start to the 2024-25 Zain Bahrain Basketball League last night with a resounding 96-73 win over Al Ettihad at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
Muharraq had a strong start to take a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, but after Ettihad got to within 39-45 at the half, the victors outscored their rivals 51-34 in the final two periods to come away with the big victory.
Tony Mitchell poured in 27 points, including six three-pointers, to spearhead Muharraq, who led by as many as 23 in the game. Mitchell also took down 12 rebounds and dished out five assists. Zachary Lofton chipped in with 17 markers while Bader Abdulla Malabes had 16.
Josh Nicholas scored 28 for Ettihad in the loss, while Kevin Mickle contributed 20.
Two more league games are scheduled for this evening to wrap up the first week of action. At 5.30pm, defending champions Manama go up against Al Hala, followed at 7.30pm by Sitra taking on Samaheej.
