The pairing of Maria Ustic of Britain and Maria Andreou Portselan of Cyprus, and the Turkish tandem of Emirhan Bulut and Yagiz Yildiz, were yesterday crowned doubles champions in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tournament 2024, which is currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hardcourts in Isa Town.
Ustic and Portselan won the girls’ doubles title while Bulut and Yildiz were winners amongst the boys’ duos.
Ustic and Portselan upset the second-seeded pairing of Aleksandra Rozkalne of Latvia and Alina Sogomonyan of Armenia 6-1, 7-5 in their final. Bulut and Yildiz also won against high-ranked rivals, beating third seeds Georgio Bidan of Lebanon and Skander Nsairi of Tunisia 6-2, 7-6 (2).
The pairs became the latest doubles champions in Bahrain.
Also yesterday, singles top seeds Masa Jankovic of Serbia and Marat Salbiev advanced to their respective finals.
Jankovic set up a title-deciding match-up with fourth seed Alisa Grinkevich in the girls’ singles. Jankovic was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over third seed Gloria Pop of Romania, while Alisa needed to fight back from a set down to beat Caroline Hermanns of Denmark 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In the boys’ singles, number one seed Salbiev will face off with fourth seed Skander Nsairi of Tunisia for their championship. Salbiev beat fifth-seeded Serbian Matija Putic 6-2, 6-1, while Nsairi upset second seed Emirhan Bulut 6-3, 6-0.
Tournament action concludes today with the finals of the boys’ and girls’ singles. All are welcome to attend and watch the action, which begins at 10am. Entrance to the BTF is free of charge.
The ongoing ITF competition is a J60 event – meaning that the singles winners take away 60 ranking points – and it is the third on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar to be held in the kingdom.
Two J30 championships also took place at the BTF last month, along with the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group V and the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group III.
