Singer Nawal Al Zaid, popularly known as Nawal Al Kuwaitia (Kuwaiti Nawal), was stripped of her Kuwaiti citizenship yesterday.
Nawal is one of the biggest stars of khaleeji music. Active on the scene since 1983, she is one of the most recognisable voices in the Gulf, performing at concerts across the region. She also performed at a concert in Bahrain last year.
She has a number of successful albums to her credit.
Nawal was born a Bedouin (stateless person) in Kuwait in 1966 and only obtained her citizenship in 2001 following a decree by the previous Amir of Kuwait, Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
Nawal was among 1,758 others who lost their citizenship.
Another notable figure who lost his citizenship is the famous actor Dawood Hussain, who turned out to have Bolivian citizenship.
The decision follows the Kuwaiti authorities' three-month campaign to identify those with forgeries and dual citizenship.
However, no reason was given for stripping Nawal of her Kuwaiti citizenship.
