Bahrain boasts a safe and healthy work environment, setting an advanced model in regulating the labour market and foreign workers, a top global organisation has stressed.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Workers’ Specialist Mustafa Said commended the kingdom’s relentless efforts to balance between the labour market needs and protecting the workers’ rights. He emphasised the need to develop a legal framework consistent with the international labour standards to foster protection of the labour rights and improve the working conditions.
Mr Said praised Bahrain’s initiative to extend the outdoor summer work ban at noon from two months to three months, starting from next year. “The kingdom was one of the leading Gulf countries which imposed the ban. Therefore, extending it to three months was a significant decision that reflects the Bahraini government’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy working environment that aligns with the international labour standards,” he told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
Mr Said praised the efforts of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) to develop services tailored for foreign workers, including streamlining procedures and enhancing performance. He called for a social dialogue between the workers’ representatives and employers to enhance legal and organisational guarantees aimed at protecting the workers’ rights.
The ILO specialist affirmed that Bahrain’s success to maintain its Tier 1 ranking in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report reflects the kingdom’s keenness to combat human trafficking. “Building on this achievement requires continuous development of legislation and the implementation mechanisms to ensure full and efficient protection for all workers,” he noted.
