TENNIS – FANGYU Shang from China and Stanislav Kosev from Bulgaria were both crowned singles champions yesterday in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tennis Tournament 2024, which came to a close at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
Fangyu secured the girls’ title while Stanislav won the boys’ crown.
The pair of singles finals wrapped up action in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) competition, which was a J30 event. It was the first of three successive ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors tournaments taking place in the kingdom over the next few weeks.
Fangyu, the third seed amongst the girls, won her singles championship after beating compatriot and sixth seed Xiang Liu 6-2, 6-2 in their final.
The result earned the young Chinese victor two titles in the competition, as she had also earlier teamed up with Xiang to win the girls’ doubles crown. As second seeds, they beat the top-seeded Turkish pairing of Deniz Cakil and Bahar Kilic 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Stanislav won the boys’ singles title after battling back from a set down to defeat Erkut Aydin of Turkey 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in yesterday’s final.
The champions in the boys’ doubles were Emirhan Bulut and Yagiz Yildiz, also from Turkey.
Following yesterday’s play, the winners and runners-up were presented their respective trophies and medals in an awards presentation by BTF president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa alongside BTF secretary general Fuad Al Rowaie.
The J30 event will be followed by another of the same level starting from tomorrow and continuing until Saturday. The third ITF tournament in Bahrain will be a J60 event, scheduled for December 2 to 8.
Each tournament’s name – J30 and J60 – reflects the number of ranking points awarded to the singles winner of that particular event.
