HORSERACING – RETURNOFTHEMAC lifted a Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co (GPIC) Cup last night at a brilliantly lit Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Jockey Ali Husain steered the seven-year-old to first place in the nine-furlong night race, carrying a BD3,000 total prize, for owners Al Mohamediya Racing and trainer Osama Hashim.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Supreme Council for Environment deputy chairman and REHC deputy chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa attended yesterday’s events.
Returnofthemac’s win came in the eighth and penultimate event on a stacked nine-race card in the second meeting of the kingdom’s 2024-25 national horseracing season.
Winforglory finished second to make it a Mohamediya one-two for trainer Ali Abdulmajeed and jockey PJ McDonald, while West Suffolk was third for Shaikh Khalid bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Abdulrahim Jasim. Grigadale came fourth as the race’s last prize money winner for Mohamediya and Abdulmajeed, while ridden by Andrew Breslin.
Two other GPIC Cups were up for the taking during yesterday’s programme.
Winning in race five, held over seven furlongs and also with a BD3,000 prize, Roosevelt’s Grit triumphed for Mohamed Ahmed Al Buainain and Yousif Alboainain, with Hasan Al Saffar in the saddle; while taking the GPIC Cup in race four, covering 11 furlongs with BD3,000 in prize money, was Signalman, competing for Victorious, Fawzi Nass, and Husain Makki.
Finishing behind Roosevelt’s Grit in yesterday’s fifth event, was Hardtail, running for M and E Racing, AM Smith, and Seamie Heffernan. In third was Mujtahid, racing for the Mohamediya-Abdulmajeed-Breslin triumvirate, and Sea Dart came fourth for Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, Haider Ebrahim, and Abdulla Faisal.
In the fourth race, Signalman won ahead of Miss Yvonne, competing for the Mohamediya-Abdulmajeed-McDonald connection, while Port Douglas finished third for Ali Jaafar Darwish, Jaffar Darwish, and Mohammed Jamil. Taking fourth place was Fourth Time Lucky for Al Mallah Racing, Abduljaleel Al Mallah, and Jasim. Elsewhere yesterday, Social Distancing clinched the Palace Enterprises Cup for Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Lee Newman, while Juantorena claimed the Late Abdulhadi Al Afoo Cup for Victorious and Nass, while ridden by Rosie Jessop.
