JIU-JITSU – BAHRAIN’S jiu-jitsu superstar Ali Monfaradi was yesterday crowned world champion to headline a five-medal haul for the kingdom’s national team at the 2024 World Championships, held in Heraklion, Greece.
Monfaradi struck gold in the adult no-gi men’s under-77kg category.
Bahrain’s other medals included two silver and two bronze medals. Abdulla Ali clinched an adult men’s silver and Alaa Ahmed captured an adult women’s bronze; while Bader Al Doseri came away with a masters men’s silver and Nijad Algosaibi completed their haul with a masters men’s bronze.
In Monfaradi’s competition, he was joined on the podium by silver-medallist Artem Dvorzhanskyi of Ukraine, while the Kazakh pair of Olzhas Nurtakanov and Seiilkhan Bolatbek shared the bronze.
Ali secured his silver medal in the adult no-gi men’s under-56kg class. Maksat Muratuly of Kazakhstan was the gold-medallist, while Romnick Vertudazo of Canada and Osamah Ali Almarwai of Saudi Arabia shared the bronze.
Ahmed won her bronze in the adult no-gi women’s under-57kg. She shared third place with Shurentsetseg Enkhmunkh of Mongolia, while Marceau Felicia of Canada won gold and Mongoljin Ganbaatar, also of Mongolia, took the silver.
The three accolades placed Bahrain in tied-23rd on the medal table along with Serbia. Forty-one countries came away with awards in the adult competitions, led by Kazakhstsan, who had 18 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 45.
Meanwhile, Al Doseri claimed silver in the master two men’s under-77kg, where Cesar Ivan Perez of Panama bagged gold. Marius Stan of Romania and Yoni Ramras of Israel both finished third.
Algosaibi added his bronze in the master two men’s under-85kg category. He shared the final podium step with Andrew McColl of Canada, while Wolfgang Friedrich Heindel of Germany won gold and Mykhailo Artsimovytch of Ukraine took silver.
