CUE SPORTS – HAIDER Maroom struck gold last night to continue Bahrain’s sensational medal haul in the Arab Billiards and Snooker Championships 2024, currently taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Haider secured first place yesterday in the men’s under-17 singles 10-ball billiards competition.
His gold was the third for Bahrain in the event and eighth overall after five days of action.
Six of those medals were claimed in billiards by Haider, his brother Hussain Maroom, and their teammate Ebrahim Al Qaed, while the other two were won in snooker, captured by Habib Sabah and Hesham Al Saqer.
There are 13 nations from across the region competing in the tournament, and Bahrain are currently amongst the leading delegations.
Haider’s victory last night earned him his fourth medal of the championships and third in individual play.
He previously won two bronze – in the men’s under-19 singles nine-ball event and the men’s under-17 singles nine-ball. Then, Haider teamed up with Hussain and Al Qaed to claim the senior men’s doubles 10-ball gold.
Bahrain’s third gold medal so far was claimed by Hussain in the men’s under-19 singles nine-ball category. He also came away with a silver in the senior men’s singles nine-ball competition.
“We are very pleased to have won our medals,” Hussain told the GDN last night from Riyadh. “We still have a few events to go. Inshaallah, we can bring more.”
Meanwhile, in snooker, Sabah claimed a bronze medal in the men’s masters singles competition. He then teamed up with Al Saqer to also claim a bronze in the men’s doubles event.
With their medal haul so far, Bahrain Billiards, Snooker and Darts Federation (BBSDF) president Monther Al Basri expressed his delight with the national team’s performances. He said that they are on the right track to achieve a better result this year than in the competition’s previous edition, with plenty of action still remaining and more medals up for grabs.
Bahrain’s billiards team in Riyadh also features women’s players Nahla Al Sunni and Aisha Buhazza, who will be competing over the coming days.
Sabah and Al Saqer are joined on the snooker squad by Abdulla Alali and Hussain Aqeel.
The kingdom’s delegation at the event is headed by BBSDF board member Hussain Bubshait, and it includes administrator Hamad Dhaif.
