Matej Mohoric gave Team Bahrain Victorious a strong finish in the Renewi Tour in Belgium yesterday, placing sixth on the fifth and concluding stage.
The Slovenian completed the 202.7-kilometre leg 20 seconds behind stage winner Arnaud De Lie of Lotto Dstny, who claimed first place in four hours 30 minutes and 56 seconds.
Mohoric was followed not far behind on the stage ranking by British teammate Fred Wright in 11th, while German Nikias Arndt came 47th for the squad. Their three other riders yesterday, including German Phil Bauhaus, Italian Andrea Pasqualon, and Pole Lukasz Wisniowski, did not finish.
Following his sixth-place yesterday, Mohoric climbed an impressive 18 places to eighth on the race’s final general classification (GC). The yellow jersey was won by Tim Wellens of UAE Team Emirates.
The Bahrain Victorious squad also improved five positions to eighth overall amongst the 21 participating squads on the concluding teams’ rankings.
The Renewi Tour was part of this year’s WorldTour, held under the banner of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), global cycling’s governing body.
Meanwhile, in another WorldTour event yesterday, Bahrain Victorious rider Jack Haig of Australia placed 37th and teammate Torstein Traen of Norway came 38th as the squad’s best finishers in the 15th stage of the Vuelta a Espana.
It was a 143km leg, with Haig and Traen being trailed by Fran Miholjevic of Croatia in 105th, German Jasha Sutterlin in 121st, and Pole Kamil Gradek in 133rd.
Haig also remained the best-placed team member on the race’s GC in 18th.
The race, also known as “La Vuelta”, has a rest day today. Action continues tomorrow with stage 16, covering a distance of 181.5km and starting at Luanco before finishing at Lagos de Covadonga. The leg kicks off the final week of the Vuelta a Espana, which is the third Grand Tour event of the UCI season. It follows the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France.
