CYCLING – Andrea Pasqualon put Team Bahrain Victorious in the top 10 yesterday in the fifth stage of the Tour de Pologne in Poland.
The Italian, who finished in ninth position yesterday, took over as the squad’s sprinter from German teammate Phil Bauhaus, who suffered a crash in the run-in to yesterday’s leg, forcing him out of contention.
Pasqualon was amongst the leading group of finishers after 187.6 kilometres. Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step was the victor in a time of four hours and five minutes.
Bahrain Victorious’ Polish rider Lukasz Wisniowski finished not far behind Pasqualon in 18th, while teammate and Pasqualon’s countryman Edoardo Zambanini and Slovenian Matej Mohoric were 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Briton Fred Wright came 39th and Spaniard Pello Bilbao rounded out the team’s participants in 123rd for the stage.
There was no change at the top of the general classification for Bahrain Victorious, with Mohoric currently sixth and Zambanini in seventh. They are both 44 seconds behind overall leader and yellow jersey holder Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma-Lease a Bike.
In the points rankings for the green jersey, Mohoric and Zambanini both dropped two spots to ninth and 10th, respectively.
Bahrain Victorious stayed in second overall in the teams’ rankings. They are three minutes and four seconds behind leaders UAE Team Emirates.
The race continues today with the 183.2km ‘Queen stage’, beginning in Wadowice and ending in Bukovina Resort.
