Team Bahrain Victorious rider Matej Mohoric posted an impressive fifth-place finish yesterday in the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne, which got underway in Poland.
The Slovenian finished six seconds behind winner Thibau Nys of Lidl-Trek, who completed the 156.1-kilometre leg in a time of three hours 37 minutes and seven seconds.
Mohoric was Bahrain Victorious’ best finisher. Italian Teammate Edoardo Zambanini was not far behind in 11th, while Spaniard Pello Bilbao came 24th. Briton Fred Wright finished in 37th place, while rounding out the team’s competitors were Italian Andrea Pasqualon in 114th, Pole Lukasz Wisniowski in 131st, and German Phil Bauhaus in 152nd.
Mohoric was Bahrain Victorious’ leader on the general classification in fifth for the battle for the yellow jersey. He was also fifth in the points rankings for the green jersey.
The squad were ranked second overall in the teams’ classification after stage one, just six seconds behind top-ranked UAE Team Emirates.
The Tour de Pologne continues today with an individual time trial stage of 15.4km, starting from Myslakowice and ending in Karpacz. The course is uphill from start to finish.
There are seven stages in all in the 1,049.3km race, which is a part of this year’s UCI World Tour. It is the only World Tour race between the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana, and it has attracted a high quality field of top-class riders.
