Team Bahrain Victorious rider Santiago Buitrago climbed 10 spots on the general classification (GC) yesterday after the fourth stage of the Tour de France 2024.
The Colombian was Bahrain Victorious’ top finisher in yesterday’s mountainous 139.6-kilometre leg, which began in the Italian town of Pinerolo and ended in the French commune of Valloire.
Buitrago completed the stage more than two-and-a-half minutes behind winner Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates, who had a time of three hours 46 minutes and 38 seconds in first place.
Buitrago was followed on the stage rankings by Spanish teammate Pello Bilbao in 23rd, Australian Jack Haig in 26th, and Dutchman Wout Poels in 51st. Completing the team’s riders on the classification were Slovenian Matej Mohoric in 109th, Briton Fred Wright in 111th, and German Nikias Arndt in 113th.
Following the fourth stage, Buitrago is now in 15th on the GC with his impressive 10-place climb. He replaced Bilbao as Bahrain Victorious’ top rider so far, with Bilbao dropping 10 positions yesterday to 16th. Pogacar is in first place overall, holding a more-than-four-minute gap ahead of Buitrago and Bilbao on the GC.
Buitrago also went up two spots on the ranking for best young rider, where he is now fifth overall. He is more than three minutes behind current leader Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step team.
The 21-stage Tour de France continues today with a 177.4km fifth stage from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint Vulbas.
This year’s race is the second Grand Tour event of the 2024 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Tour calendar. The first was the Giro d’Italia in May, and the third will be the Vuelta a Espana, scheduled for August and September.
