Team Bahrain Victorious rider Pello Bilbao continued yesterday his strong start to the Tour de France 2024.
The Spaniard rose one position to eighth on the road race’s general classification (GC) after placing 26th in yesterday’s 199.2-kilometre second stage.
Bilbao was the team’s top finisher in the leg, won by Kevin Vauquelin of Arkea-B&B Hotels team. Bahrain Victorious’ Colombian rider Santiago Buitrago followed in 35th overall, while Australian Jack Haig came 41st. Dutch rider Wout Poels finished in 81st, Slovenian Matej Mohoric was 89th, and Briton Fred Wright came 122nd.
The Bahrain Victorious field was rounded off by Germans Nikias Arndt and Phil Bauhaus, who were 128th and 135th, respectively, in stage two.
Bilbao is now 21 seconds behind leader Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates on the GC. Buitrago made a significant improvement in the overall ranking, climbing 21 places to 26th, more than a minute behind Pogacar. Buitrago also rose six places to seventh on the ranking for best young rider.
In the points standings, Mohoric dropped nine positions to 22nd and also went down three places to ninth in the king of the mountain ranking.
Racing continues today with the third stage, covering a distance of 230.8 kilometres.
