GOLF – John Catlin, the talented American golfer, showcased his dominance at the Saudi Open golf tournament, presented by the Public Investment Fund. With an impressive performance extending over three consecutive days, Catlin achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new men’s record with a total score of 62.
As the tournament nears its conclusion today, held at the esteemed Riyadh Golf Club, Catlin finds himself on the brink of clinching the championship title.
Commencing the penultimate round, the American sensation Catlin held a lead over his main rivals, Scott Hend and Haotong Lee. Displaying his unwavering determination, Catlin embarked on a strong start, asserting his competitive spirit by securing an early advantage within the first five holes. His strategic manoeuvres continued as he effortlessly navigated through the 10th and 11th holes, widening the gap in his favour on the leaderboard.
Thai golfer Kiradech Aviniyarnath emerged as a strong contender, claiming the second-place position and posing a formidable challenge to the prominent competitors Wade Ormsby, David Puig from Spain, Scott Hend, and Li Haotong from China.
Currently at the helm of the championship leaderboard, Catlin seeks to secure consecutive victories on the Asian Tour, following his triumph at the Macau International Championship in March. However, the 33-year-old remains grounded, refusing to take anything for granted. He intends to persevere until the conclusion of the final round today.
Reflecting on his performance after the culmination of the third day’s competition, Catlin said: “I maintained a high level of play today, similar to the preceding days. The conditions were challenging, but my strategy was to capitalise on any progress I could make, especially considering the presence of numerous skilled players.”
When asked about his approach for the upcoming final day, Catlin affirmed, “I do not intend to alter my approach. I will continue to exhibit the same tenacity and determination that I displayed from the tournament’s inception.”
This marks Catlin’s second visit to Saudi Arabia, but his first to Riyadh. Following his extraordinary performance, he conveyed his affinity for the location, expressing his desire to return whenever the opportunity arises. Catlin stated: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The people have been incredibly friendly, the facilities exceptional, and I have developed a fondness for this tournament. I eagerly anticipate future occasions to participate.”
South African golfer Peter Ohlin delivered an outstanding performance yesterday. His impressive score of 65 propelled him to a commendable seven under par. Additionally, the renowned Leaf golf star exhibited remarkable progress, achieving four consecutive birdies. Ohlin acknowledges the need for continued dedication and eagerly anticipates giving his all during the final round.
As he prepared for the closing stages of the tournament, Ohlin remarked: “On the last day, I must execute my shots to perfection. I will give it my utmost effort, hoping that the prevailing conditions will be favourable.”
Reflecting on his round, Ohlin said: “I performed admirably on the front nine. However, the winds posed a challenge, preventing me from securing additional birdies, particularly during holes 15 and 18. It is indeed disappointing.”
Thai golfers Panufulpitiarat and Etipat Puranathaniarat achieved scores of 66 and 69, respectively, securing the ninth-place position below the tournament average.
Meanwhile, Moroccan golfers Ousmane Rouzi and Ayoub Laguerati persevered through a challenging third round, competing alongside their accomplished counterparts.
