GOLF – Saudi Arabia’s first professional golfer Othman Almulla took the lead after the first round as the 59th Bahrain Open Championship teed off yesterday with more than 100 players aiming for glory at the Awali Golf Club.
Almulla carded four-under-par 66 while three strokes further back were two-time winner Saleh Al Kaabi and Ahmed Mohammed Al Zayed, both on 69.
Meanwhile, Sarah Hobday and Helen Woollacott shared the lead with 88 in the 35th Bahrain Ladies Open Golf Championship. The leaders are closely followed by title defender Hanne Hansen and Jeong Hae Kwak with 92 each.
The ladies’ championship attracted more than 20 players from Bahrain and overseas.
The event is being sponsored by Bapco Refining, NBB, Gulf Air, American Mission Hospital, Banz Group, African & Eastern, Arwa, Seef Dental, Bahrain Financing Company and Intercontinental Regency, who are catering the food for the tournaments.
The championships conclude today.
