South Korea overcame a slow start and some dogged resistance from their opponents to inflict an 89-62 defeat on Bahrain last night in their second Group C game of the 2023 Fiba U16 Asian Championship at the Al Rayyan Indoor Hall in Doha, Qatar.
Bahrain took an early lead at the start of the game and actually led by nine points until the last two minutes of the first quarter before South Korea added 10 points and surged to a one-point lead, at 21-20, as the second quarter began.
The Koreans built on their momentum in the second quarter, going up 6-0 before heading to the change room leading 44-27 at half-time, after adding another 23 points to Bahrain’s seven.
Bahrain received no respite in the third quarter as the Koreans continued to pull even further in front, adding another 22 points to the Reds’ 13, to enter the fourth quarter, leading 66-40.
A 26-point deficit was always going to be difficult to overhaul in the last 10 minutes of the game and so it proved, even though Bahrain added 22 points, to Korea’s 23, in the final quarter to lose by 27 points.
Ali Mohsen Habib, with 17 points, four rebounds and assist, and Husain Mohamed Alsamaheeji, who also scored 17 points and had eight rebounds and four assists, did the bulk of the scoring for Bahrain.
Currently last in the four-team table with two points, Bahrain will now play leaders New Zealand, who have four points from two consecutive wins, in their final group game today with only pride to play for.
