With Greta Gerwig’s 'Barbie' taking theatres by storm, social media users are gripped by a challenge, mimicking the iconic arched feet of the doll. However, concerns are being raised over the trend.
The challenge was inspired by the famous arched pose of the feet of Barbie dolls shown by Margot Robbie in the movie. The clip of her arched feet released in preview clips before the actual release of the movie served as inspiration for the challenge, which involves stepping out of heels and standing on tiptoes to maintain the pose.
University of Michigan podiatrist, Sari Priesand warns participants of the trend and says that overdoing the stance can cause damage to the feet. This pose strains the ankle, and other parts of the foot like the Achilles tendon, which connects muscles from the back of the calf to the heel.
“Leave the Barbie feet to the Barbies,” says Priesand in a press release.
‘Barbie’ has inspired multiple foot-related trends, with clear heels having a 51% increase in products added to the market in the last 30 days, as confirmed by Trendalytics to The Post.
Priesand comments on the impact that high-heeled shoes can have on the feet over time. While Barbie manages to wear heels all the time, medical opinion actually cautions against the overuse of high-heeled shoes, as they increase pressure on your footprint and cause the increased development of calluses.
"If the shoe is not comfortable, to begin with, it's probably not going to be a good choice in terms of having to wear it for working, commuting, standing for long periods of time, or other everyday activities," says Priesand.
