Bahraini Abdulrahman Mahmoud has qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games with a 21.10m throw in the shot-put competition at the Belarus Athletics Indoor Cup.
Mahmoud is the first Bahraini athlete in shot-put and throwing competitions in general to qualify for the Olympics since Bahrain’s participation in athletics at the Los Angeles Games in 1984.
Mahmoud’s throw also won him gold in the competition.
Bahrain Athletics Association chairman Mohammed Abdullatif bin Jalal congratulated His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
He also congratulated SCYS first deputy chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
There is mounting uncertainty over this summer’s delayed Games following a surge in new coronavirus cases.
However, the International Olympic Committee has said it is fully committed to hosting the Games later this year.
The quadrennial global spectacle was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the IOC fixed a new date – July 23 to August 8.
