A NURSE described the shocking moment when a man viciously attacked her in a street, pulled her by the hair and banged her head on a vehicle’s bonnet.
The 27-year-old Indian man is on trial at the High Criminal Court for allegedly attacking the woman, also Indian, aged 32, after failing to snatch her bag as she walked home from work.
The GDN had reported on the February 18 attack as CCTV footage caught the incident in which the man is seen suddenly lunging at her and pushing her to the ground.
He then viciously beats her and bashes her head on the ground before grabbing her by the hair and throwing her against a parked pickup truck.
The nurse, who works at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, managed to cry for help which is when the defendant fled the scene.
She described to prosecutors how two men helped her before she phoned her husband to pick her up following the attack.
“I work as a nurse at the Salmaniya Medical Complex and was on my way home at 11pm,” she said as she described her ordeal to prosecutors.
“I then felt a person walking behind me but initially did not pay attention to him.
“I stopped to let a car pass by and he stopped also.
“I then continued walking when he suddenly jumped at me from behind, pushed me to the ground and viciously attacked me as I screamed.
“He pulled me by my hair and banged my head on a parked car’s bonnet.
“He also attempted to snatch my bag but I held onto it.
“Two passers-by came to my rescue but my assailant managed to flee.
“I then phoned my husband and he picked me up before we reported the incident to the police.”
The Indian man previously pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and attempted theft when he appeared in the court.
However, he admitted to prosecutors during questioning that he was trying to mug the woman but failed to do so when she alerted passers-by.
He also described in detail how he followed the woman, attacked her and strangled her before fleeing the scene.
He was arrested two days later, on February 20, in connection with the attack.
The CCTV footage from a nearby shop, located on the road leading to St Mary’s Orthodox Church, has been presented as evidence during a previous hearing.
It shows the man closely following the woman for a short distance before attacking her.
The woman exclusively told the GDN at the time that she suffered injuries to her abdomen and chest, while stressing that she did not recognise the man nor was she aware of his motive.
The woman, who hails from Kerala, has been living in Bahrain with her husband since 2012. The trial was adjourned to tomorrow for review.
