BAHRAIN’S Ali Monfaradi made history last night in London winning a bronze medal in the black belt adult (69kg) category of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam – London which is part of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour.
The 26-year-old athlete of Alliance Elements JJ thus became the only Bahraini black belt to compete and win a medal at the highest level.
Another Bahraini, Nijad Al Gosaibi of Reza Monfaradi BJI Team-Bahrain, won gold in the brown belt Master 2 category (77kg).
Cobra Bahrain’s Ahmed Al Aradi captured the Blue Master 2 (120kg) silver medal to complete a very satisfying day for Barhain.
The London evert was part of five grand slams from the AJP Tour which will conclude with the World Professional Championship to be held in Abu Dhabi in April.
“I’m in a good place- I’ve been training and preparing very well,” Ali Monfaradi had told the GDN before leaving for London.
“I have a good track record in this competition because when I was a brown belt three years ago I have won this event but black belt is on a completely different level. “Hopefully I’d be able to repeat this result.”
And last night, he did.
Monfaradi has been training for over 14 years since he was a 12-year-old as he started in 2006 when jiu jitsu children’s classes began in Bahrain.
