AN art exhibition honouring late Saudi artist Zakia Al Dubaikhi will be held next week at Akkas Gallery, Maqabah.
Around 60 art pieces of varying sizes will be showcased from Monday.
The expo is being organised by Basma Al Zamil in honour of her late mother who always wanted to have a gallery in her own name.
Proceeds from the show will go towards funding a charity educational project in India.
It will be inaugurated by Bahrain International Federation of Business president Shaikha Hind bint Salman Al Khalifa at 7pm and will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 8pm.
“When my mother retired as an English teacher for high school students in Saudi Arabia she always wanted to return to the art scene,” Ms Al Zamil told the GDN.
“She returned to her brush and canvas and even when she got sick didn’t stop but continued drawing while in the waiting room of the hospital.
“She passed away in November 2018, so she didn’t get to achieve her dream of having her own gallery in her lifetime.”
While looking through her mother’s belongings Ms Al Zamil said she found numerous paintings and decided to organise an exhibition.
A similar exhibition in Saudi Arabia raised BD700 for 10 patients who couldn’t afford medicine or equipment.
“I’m collaborating with a team in India and we’re trying to find the right project,” added Ms Al Zamil.
“Proceeds from all the prints sold at this exhibition will go towards that project.
“We’re hoping to build a classroom but it all depends on how much we manage to raise; otherwise we’ll use the money to buy books and to support low-income families who have children in schools and can’t afford their education.”
