Harry Potter cast pay tribute to 'beloved Professor Snape'.

Los Angeles: The team of 'Harry Potter', including the author and lead cast members Danielle Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have paid heart-rending homage to actor Alan Rickman, most famously known for his role of strict professor Severus Snape in the fantasy film series.

He may have been a stalwart actor on the screen and stage, but an entire generation will always remember Alan Rickman as Professor Severus Snape, the surly potions master and unassuming hero of the Harry Potter series.

Rickman, aged 69, died following a battle with cancer.

Remembering the brilliance of Rickman on and off screen, in a long post, Radcliffe tweeted, "Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with.

He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry.

"He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter.

"I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York.

"He didn't have to do that.

"I know other people who've been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say "if you call Alan, it doesn't matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he's doing, he'll get back to you within a day."

The 26-year-old star said he liked that the veteran treated him like a colleague not a child on the 'Harry Potter' set.

"As an actor he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child.

"Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career.

"Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man," he wrote.

Watson, who played intelligent, sensible Hermoine Granger, was not far behind to express her sadness.

"I'm very sad to hear about Alan today.

"I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor.

"I'll really miss our conversations. RIP Alan. We love you."

Rupert Grint, who became famous for his role as Harry's best friend Ron Weasley, gave this statement, "I am devastated to hear about the passing of Alan Rickman, I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him on numerous occasions.

"Even though he has gone, I will always hear his voice.

"My thoughts are with his friends and family at this time."

'Harry Potter' author JK Rowling tweeted that she was "shocked and devastated" to hear of Rickman's passing, describing his death as a great loss.

"There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman's death.

"He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man", she said.

Actor Matthew Lewis, who played the cute and usually timid Neville Longbottom, wrote, "I was at Leavesden Studios today when I heard the news.

"As I walked through the canteen I thought of Alan queuing up for his lunch with us mere mortals.

"I recalled the trailer in which he offered me some of the greatest advice I ever received about this mad profession we shared.

"He inspired my career more than he ever knew and I'll miss him."

James and Oliver Phelps, who played the Weasley twins Fred and George, brothers of Ron, were some of the first cast members to pay tribute to Rickman when news of his death broke.

James tweeted, "Shocked & sad to hear Alan Rickman has passed away.

"One of the nicest actors I've ever met.

"Thoughts and prayers with his family at this time."

This was followed by a tweet from his brother Oliver, shortly afterwards.

"Terribly sad news about the passing of Alan Rickman.

"A funny and engaging person who put a shy young actor at ease when I was on HP."

Michael Gambon, who played Professor Dumbledore, Hogwarts headmaster, spoke of the late actor with great warmth on BBC Radio 4.

He worked with Rickman, both, on screen and in the theatre.

"Everybody loved Alan.

"He was always happy and fun and creative and very, very funny.

"He had a great voice, he spoke wonderfully well.

"He was intelligent, he wrote plays, he directed a play.

"So he was a real man of the theatre and the stage and that's how I think of Alan."

Actress Bonnie Wright, who played Ron's sister and Harry's love interest, said in a statement, "As a young actor I was incredibly fortunate to have worked with Alan and be exposed to his graceful methods".

"He had that rare ability to shift the energy of a set the moment he walked on.

"I will never forget his deep, measured and theatrical voice.

"He will be missed by the Potter family."

Actor Jason Isaacs, who played fellow Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, said the news of Rickman's passing had really upset him.

"Sidestepped by the awful news today", he said.

"The polar opposite of the icy, manipulating characters he became best known for, Alan was hilarious, warm-hearted and fabulous company.

"To witness his laser-like honesty and precision as an actor in the flesh was a rare privilege.

"A great artist and a lovely man."

And Evana Lynch, a.k.a slightly eccentric Luna Lovegood, remembered a man "so kind and generous in the moments he wasn't Snaping about."

Emma Thompson, who played Professor Sybill Trelawney in Harry Potter as well as appearing opposite Rickman in 'Love, Actually', called him her "ultimate ally".

"What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness", she said.

"His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word.

"The intransigence which made him the great artist he was, his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view.

"I learned a lot from him."
