BAHRAIN are set to face hosts Iraq in the final of the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship 2019, which is scheduled to be played tomorrow.
The Iraqis confirmed their berth early yesterday morning following a 2-1 victory over Yemen.
It was their final match in Group ‘A’ of the tournament’s preliminary round and it secured first place in their division, where they have 10 points from four matches.
Bahrain booked their tickets after finishing atop Group ‘B’ following their thrilling 1-0 victory over Kuwait early Sunday morning. They finished the preliminaries with a total of seven points from three games.
Tomorrow’s final, at Karbala International Stadium, is scheduled for a 10.30pm start, Bahrain time. The Bahrainis will be hoping to pocket the $100,000 prize money for the champions. The runners-up get $50,000.
The national team arrived in Karbala yesterday ahead of the title-deciding match.
Bahrain’s group games were played in the city of Erbil. They had travelled from there to the city of Najaf by plane, before carrying on by road to Karbala Upon their arrival at Najaf airport, they were greeted by high-ranking Bahraini officials in Najaf.
Bahrain, managed by head coach Helio Sousa, are expected to train today and tomorrow as they gear up for the final.
