BAHRAIN’S leading elite athletes had a series of strong performances in various international meetings and road races held across the globe.
“Golden Girl” Salwa Eid Naser yesterday placed second in the women’s 200 metres while competing in the 2019 Nanjing World Challenge in China.
Meanwhile, John Koech was a solid sixth in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix Osaka 2019 in Japan on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Bahrain’s Dawit Fikadu emerged victorious in the men’s race of the Happy 10K Guangzhou event in China, while Tejitu Daba was sixth in the TET Riga Marathon in Latvia.
Elsewhere, Bahrainis Aweke Ayalew and Rose Chelimo both finished in the top 10 of their respective runs in the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) World 10K Bengaluru 2019 in India.
Each of the events were a part of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) season calendar.
In Nanjing, the event was a part of the IAAF World Challenge Meetings.
Second
Salwa was running the 200m and came an impressive second. She completed the half-lap in 22.56 seconds, narrowly being beaten by Jamaican Elaine Thompson who won in 22.40s. Blessing Okagrabe of Nigeria almost matched Salwa but had to settle for third in 22.58s.
In Nanjing yesterday, Koech was competing in his second 3,000m steeplechase race in three days. He finished a solid eighth from 15 starters, claiming a time of eight minutes 20.78 seconds.
Koech had just on Saturday competed in the same discipline at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix Osaka. He took sixth place in 8:30.04. Koech was the lone Bahraini in Osaka.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Fikadu was triumphant in the Happy 10K Guagzhou event, which was an IAAF Bronze Label Road Race. Fikadu won in a total time of 29 minutes 53 seconds.
In Latvia, Tejitu completed the women’s event in the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in two hours 36 minutes 38 seconds. Birke Debele Beyene of Ethiopia won in 2:26:18.
In India, the TCS World Bengaluru was also an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, and Bahrain’s Ayalew was classified 10th in the men’s run. He finished in 29:40, quite a distance from winner Andamlak Belihu of Ethiopia who won in 27:56.
In the women’s event, Chelimo finished ninth in 35:08.
