Kochi: The Chief Minister of the flood-hit state of Kerala, Pinirayi Vijayan, said on Tuesday that the United Arab Emirates has offered a financial assistance of Rs 700 crore (approx. $100m)for Kerala flood relief funds.
The calamity that has claimed more than 400 lives and left a million displaced has grabbed global attention.
On Saturday, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum took note of the issue and instructed to form a committee for providing relief to the affected people.
Shaikh Mohammed also urged everyone to contribute generously towards this initiative. “The people of Kerala have always been and are still part of our success story in the UAE. We have a special responsibility to help and support those affected, especially during this holy and blessed days,” he tweeted.
In response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked Shaikh Mohammed for his efforts. Modi tweeted, “A big thanks to @hhshkmohd for his gracious offer to support people of Kerala during this difficult time. His concern reflects the special ties between governments and people of India and UAE.”
There are around 2 million Indians in UAE, who form roughly 27 per cent of the country's population.
