BAHRAIN’S Musa Isah bowed out of further contention in the men’s 400 metres last night on day three of the IAAF World U20 Championship in Tampere, Finland.
Competing in the third of three semi-final heats, Isah was unable to clinch one of the race’s two automatic qualifying berths after finishing sixth from the race’s eight starters.
Only the top two from each of the heats, plus two fastest losers, advanced to the medal round.
Isah clocked a time of 46.94 seconds. The heat was won by Christopher Taylor of Jamaica in 46.18s, while Canadian Khamal Stewart-Baynes finished second in 46.38s.
Howard Fields of the US managed to take third in 46.53s, and he also was able to march through to the final after being one of the stage’s lucky losers.
Qualifying automatically from the first heat were Jonathan Sacoor of Belgium (45.72s) and Chantz Sawyers of Jamaica (46.19s); while from heat two advancing were Edoardo Scotti of Italy (45.84s) and Jonathan Jones from the Bahamas (46.22s).
Myles Misener-Daley of Canada (46.53s) was the other lucky loser to make it to the medal round.
Following Isah’s elimination, Bahrain have two other athletes in the championships still with a chance of making it onto the podium in their respective events.
Winfred Mutile Yavi advanced to the final round of the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase, which will be held today at 8.45pm, Bahrain time. Winfred is one of 15 competitors in the race. Countryman Marawan Medany, competing in the men’s discus throw (1.750kg), will be in action tomorrow in his event’s qualifying stage.
