Muharraq defeated East Riffa 2-0 last night to stay unbeaten in the first round of the Bahrain NBB Football First Division League.
In other ninth week matches, defending champions Malkiya defeated Riffa 3-0 while Manama crushed Al Ahli 4-1.
Muharraq remained on top of the league with 25 points from nine matches, five points ahead of second-placed Al Najma.
Muharraq’s victory came in the second half of the match, played at Bahrain National Stadium in Isa Town. The Reds needed to wait until the 62nd minute to open scoring, when midfielder Jamal Rashid netted the first goal.
Amidst celebration by the fans, Muharraq scored a second goal in injury time through Ismael Abdullatif.
Meanwhile, at Al Ahli Club Stadium in Mahooz, defending champions Malkiya defeated Riffa 3-0 to secure third position on the table.
The first half of the match ended 2-0, with Isa Al Barri scoring both goals in the ninth and 32nd minutes.
Malkiya’s third goal was scored by defender Hashim Sayed Adnan.
This was Malkiya’s fifth win in the first round and they now have 17 points, three behind Al Najma.
In the last match, played at Bahrain National Stadium, last season’s King Cup champions Manama crushed Al Ahli 4-1.
The first half of the match ended 1-0 for Manama, with Mahmood Abdulrahman scoring in the 12thminute.
Manama added three more goals in the second half, scored by Hisham Mansour in the 55th minute, Ali Habeeb in the 77th minute and Congolese striker Doris Salamo in the 82nd minute. Al Ahli’s goal was scored by Mahdi Hemaidan in the 90thminute.
This was Manama’s third victory in the first round, which pushed them up to fifth position on the table with 11 points from three wins and two draws. Al Ahli are at the bottom of the table with five points.
