SHAIKH Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa retained the presidency of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) for a new term until 2020, the committee announced yesterday.
Shaikh Nasser, who is also Representative of His Majesty for Charity Works and Youth Affairs and chairman of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, won the election unanimously as the committee did not receive any other candidacy yesterday, the last day to register for the election.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports general secretary Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa was also elected unanimously while Bahraini swimmer Omar Al Malki claimed one of the board positions after being elected chairman of the committee’s Athletes Commission recently.
There are 12 other candidates in the fray for the remaining seven seats on the BOC board, including Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa (table tennis), Shaikh Mohammed bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (swimming) and Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa (cycling).
Other candidates are Ali Ishaqi (handball), Khalid Al Khayyat (mixed martial arts), Abdulla Al Dossary (gymnastics), Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa (tennis), Shaikh Hamad bin Rashid Al Khalifa (shooting), Numan Al Hasan (maritime sports), Saleh Faraj (fencing), Bader Nasser (athletics) and Adel Al Fayyad (golf).
Three more candidates from non-Olympic sports federations were approved for the elections, namely Isa Abdulrahim (sports for all), Ahmed Al Nuaimi (bowling) and Rashid Al Zayani (motor sports).
The BOC General Assembly and the elections will be held on June 13.
