The top three, title-contending clubs in the 2023-24 Nasser Bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League are all in action tonight as the season’s 20th round gets underway.
Defending champions and current league leaders Al Khaldiya hold just a four-point advantage over their chief challengers for the crown, Muharraq and Riffa, with just three match days to go in this campaign. Their tight battle brings added excitement to their remaining fixtures, with crucial points up for the taking.
Khaldiya take on Al Shabab at Shaikh Ali Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium in Arad, while Muharraq go up against East Riffa at the National Stadium. Riffa play Al Ahli at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in this evening’s third game.
Khaldiya have a chance to secure back-to-back championships tonight if they win against Shabab and both Muharraq and Riffa lose.
Meanwhile, another three matches are set to take place tomorrow, with Manama going up against Al Najma, Hidd facing Busaiteen, and Sitra playing Al Hala.
All of this week’s contests are scheduled for 7pm kick-offs.
Ahli, Manama, and Najma are currently ranked behind the top three on the standings, while all six clubs in the bottom half of the table – Sitra, East Riffa, Shabab, Hala, Hidd, and Busaiteen – are still in danger of being automatically relegated or needing to compete in a play-off tournament to avoid going down to the second division.
The teams that finish the season ranked ninth and 10th will go up against Al Malkiya and Al Ettihad for two available spots in next year’s Premier League, while the bottom two sides in 11th and 12th will be demoted to division two.
Bahrain Club and A’ali have already secured their promotion to the kingdom’s top flight.
