Students from the KTCT Higher Secondary School in the state of Kerala have made their own AI-powered humanoid robot teacher called 'Iris', a first in India.
It was developed in partnership with Makerlabs Edutech, a company that aims to promote innovations in the field of education by providing personalised learning experiences for students.
Built under the Atal Tinkering Lab project initiated by the NITI Aayog, this new sari-clad AI teacher aims to revolutionise traditional teaching methods.
'Iris' made her introduction to students in a video posted to Maker Labs' Instagram.

In the video, students can be seen asking her questions and after taking a moment to ponder, Iris answers. A glowing green necklace around her neck turns orange whenever Iris is asked a question.
"Our next step is to give her 'eyes' so that she will identify each student and answer their questions. She would become more interactive and completely automated," said Abhijith, an eighth-grade student who closely worked with Makerlabs to launch the initiative.
Iris works on a generative AI model, which enables it to convert speech to text and text to speech. This also allows the robot to speak three different languages. AI model aside, Iris also can shake hands with students upon request and even tell them stories.
The humanoid robot uses four wheels to move about, with motors in the body enabling it to turn its head sideways and to move its hands. It also comes equipped with microphones embedded in its neck and a speaker to respond to queries.
