F2 – MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger topped the first Formula 2 pre-season testing session of the year on a rainy day at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) with a time of 1:53.175
Zane Maloney, of Rodin Motorsport, was just 0.176s behind with ART Grand Prix’s Victor Martins finishing third.
The session began under floodlights with Juan Maneul Correa, of DAMS Lucas Oil, hitting the track first in the #8 car.
Hauger was in front after the first hour after clocking 1:53.720 with Zak Sullivan, of ART Grand Prix, just 0.187s behind.
Martins briefly took the advantage but Hauger stormed back into P1 with a time of 1:53.175.
The intermittent drizzle that had fallen all day had stopped and the track was beginning to dry but a heavy downpour arrived just before the halfway stage forcing the drivers into their garages.
Several drivers returned to the track in the final hour with no substantial improvements in lap times.
In the session’s final 30 minutes, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, of PREMA Racing, moved into third place with his quickest effort of the day.
But Maloney, who was fourth, suddenly clocked his fastest lap of the day to move into P2 with Martins locking up P3.
