In a bizarre story coming out of Brazil, a 21-year-old student was horrified to learn that he had been shot in the head during a New Year’s party.
The worst part? He didn’t even know he had been shot or that he still had the bullet in his brain until four days later. Mateus Facio was at a New Year’s Eve party when he suddenly felt something strike his head.
Facio thought someone had thrown a rock at him and continued with the night’s festivities. Another medical student with him reportedly tended to his wound, and afterwards, the party continued.
According to Facio, after the initial pain, the group of friends continued drinking into the night and swam in the sea shortly afterwards. It wasn’t until four days later that Facio started to suspect that something might be wrong.
Facio was on a 322km road trip from Rio to his hometown of Juiz de Fora when he started experiencing arm spasms.
“I went to take a nap and woke up with my arm feeling a little silly,” Facio recalled.
“I felt my fingers moving, but I didn’t have the confidence to pick something up.” Alarmed at the symptoms he was experiencing, Facio went to the hospital where doctors revealed to him that he had a 9mm bullet embedded in his brain.
“The bullet was compressing the brain in an area close to the region responsible for the movement of the right arm, causing irritation,” explained presiding neurosurgeon Flávio Falcometa.
Facio was immediately sent to surgery, where after a 2-hour operation surgeons managed to successfully remove the bullet from his grey matter.
Facio is currently recovering from his ordeal, while the bullet has been sent to the police in an attempt to find out who fired the shot.
